Center Lecture

On June 7 at 11:00 am, Jeffrey Gabel will present the second part of his research on catalog and kit homes, The Origins of Our Architecture, Part 2 - More Kit Homes and Catalog House De-signs of the Keuka Lake Region. A discussion illustrating catalog and kit homes with examples from c.1878-1940 in and around Yates County. The architects include catalog homes sold by D.S. Hopkins, R.W. Shoppell, George F. Barber, with kit home examples after 1906 by Aladdin, Sears, Montgomery Ward, Bennett, Gordon-Van Tine, Harris Bros., Lewis, Sterling, and others. We will review regional home examples against their published illustrations, discuss the process for ordering a kit home, as well as examining the original sources of home designs that were copied by kit home manu-facturers.
