Legends and Lore
Anchored in history but awash in spooky storytelling traditions, Legends & Lore: Up from the Depths is a Halloween season crowd-pleaser back by popular demand
Hammondsport, NY – Finger Lakes tales of tragedy, mayhem, and mystery will again be on offer this October as Finger Lakes Boating Museum presents its guided theatrical tours October, 23, 24, and 25.
Legends & Lore: Up from the Depths is the Museum’s unique Halloween seasonal program, now in its third year. The hour-long guided tour takes place throughout the Museum campus, once the headquarters of the renowned Taylor Wine Company. The centerpiece of the campus is the iconic, mansard-roofed Cobblestone building built in the late 1880s. It, along with a few of the huge former wine production warehouses, have been converted into exhibition halls featuring over 100 historical Finger Lakes-built boats. Guests will experience these spaces in a whole new light on their tour, plus they will be guided through some depths of the campus not included in prior year’s tours.
“When you think about all the stories these buildings – and the boats in our collection – might tell, it’s hard not to plunge into the depths of our imagination,” said Museum Executive Director Kara Calder about the popular program. “There’s a reason that tales of myth and mayhem in the Finger Lakes are so popular, and ours is a fantastic place to showcase them.”
Characters and Guides will be portrayed by talented volunteers from Keuka Lake Players and the Museum. They will tell tales of fishing mishaps, steamboat tragedies, shattered love, infamous serial killers, and characters that just have a grip on the old winery and won’t let go. Games, guest tarot card readers, and other activities are available before and after each tour. Light fare, snacks, and beverages will be available for purchase.
Tours of about 18 guests will launch every 15 minutes. Tickets are $20 per person, discounted to $17 per person for Finger Lakes Boating Museum members. Advance purchase is highly recommended, but tickets will be sold on site if available. The Museum encourages the public to check availability online www.flbm.org/legends-lore or call 607-569-2222.
The Legends & Lore tour does not directly depict violent acts, however program themes involve tragedy and death. All ages are welcome, with guidance recommended for children under 12. The tour takes place in semi-darkness and involves walking and standing and includes multiple sets of stairs throughout. For those concerned about mobility, please email media@flbm.org.
