Opening Reception for Exhibit: Art in the Finger Lakes August finds us in the height of the summer season here in the spectacular Finger Lakes. One of the best destinations in this area is the Arts Center of Yates County on Main Street in Penn Yan. In fact, the ‘Art in the Finger Lakes’ show opening on August 2, has become an annual event. The many who have enjoyed this show over the years know that they can see work by artists who have gained local and national recognition. The opening will take place on Friday, August 2nd from 5:00 to7:00PM. Light hors d’oeuvres and wine samplings will be available. The show is free and open to the public. The first featured artist will be painter Dick Kane, a Rochester native and graduate of RIT. While at RIT he studied under a number of esteemed instructors including Ralph Avery, Jackie O’Connell, and Stan Witmeyer. Graduation did not deter Dick from his passion of painting. He has introduced the art form to many a budding artist through his numerous teaching positions. He paints in an impressionistic manner and is comfortable using oils, acrylic or watercolor as his medium. Over the course of Dick’s career, he has established a reputation for his rendition of local sights, both of Rochester and the Finger Lakes. As he puts it, “My particular passion is my personal response to nature as well as human activity, with color, shapes and mood being my principal motivators. I must be moved by the subject and still need to learn.” His passion for painting is borne out by the recognition he has enjoyed over his career, most notably a 77’ mural painted for the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Pittsford, NY, receipt of a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters and, of course, being honored as Painter of the Year 2019 by the Art Center of Yates County. The second featured artist will be watercolorist Eileen Correll who comes to this region upon retirement from a 35-year career as an art teacher in Pennsylvania. She and her husband, Phil, live on a farm in Pennsylvania when not enjoying their 1835 cobblestone home overlooking Seneca Lake. After receiving her degree in Art Education, Eileen focused her talents in watercolor painting and began concentrating on Plein Air painting in 2006. Many of her Plein Air works will be on view during this exhibit. In the summer of 2017 Eileen was accepted to participate in the Finger Lakes Plein Air Event held in Canandaigua. Eileen is active in the arts locally and is currently co-chair of the Penn Yan Art Guild.
