Description
“Celebration”, the annual Arts Center of Yates County holiday exhibit and sale, will open with an artists’ reception Sunday, November 17, 1:00-3:00 PM. Susan Hatch Murphy’s felted paintings will be featured for the first time. A few years ago Susan discovered wet felting and was immediately hooked! She paints with the beautiful myriad of colors in dyed and undyed wool varieties, telling stories with a very tactile art. This medium echoes the history of her maternal family with the use of fiber, textiles, needle and thread, sewing machine and countless hours at the kitchen counter with a rolling pin! Celebration’s artists include dozens returning by popular request. -Leah Hawley “paints” her pictures with delicately snipped pieces of postage stamps. This year she also brings a new item, holiday “birdhouse” ornaments. -Laura Wilder, a Roycroft Master Artisan, says of her vintage-style block prints, “Beauty in fine art is not always fashionable, but humans need it. Especially now. I make art to show the beauty that is still all around us. Turn off the news and notice the light through the trees. It will calm you down, and lift you up.” -Naomi Lapp’s quilt materials make functional and decorative holiday pieces. -Glenn Lapp’s wood working craft turns out Santas, creches, and snowmen large and small. -Tiger Candy Arts brings smiles to young and old with their puppets. -Artsy Lake Girl Susan Troup paints her art on furniture. -Kathy Disbrow also will be exhibiting painted furniture. -Martha Gibbs’ felted ornaments and stockings display beautifully designed birds and holiday themes. -Mike Maxwell, after a summer of coordinating the Arts Center’s pottery studio, will provide many of his own ceramic creations. The Arts Center, as always, offers hand crafted jewelry, pottery, photography, paintings, baskets, turned wood, glass, prints and notecards. Once again the members of the Penn Yan Art Guild have miniaturized their work to hang tiny paintings on your tree. Collect them from year to year, and you can have original art from dozens of local painters. Eight local artists’ works have been reproduced on holiday cards as an annual fundraiser for the Arts Center. Customers may have the cards personalized for a slight fee. The Celebration exhibit will continue through December. Gallery hours are 10:00 – 4:00 week days, 10:00 – 3:00 on Saturdays, at 127 Main Street, Penn Yan.
