Description

A bonanza of artists and crafters are lined up for the holiday “Celebration 2018” at the Arts Center of Yates County.  A public reception will be held Sunday afternoon, November 11, from 1:00-3:00

Some of the arts and crafts for display and sale include:

Laura Wilder is a Master Roycroft Renaissance Artisan, in the Arts and Crafts Movement style.  She makes block prints by hand carving and printing each color on an antique hand-cranked letterpress.  In the tradition of her distant cousin, Laure Ingalls Wilder, her themes explore the “sweet, simple things of life,” especially the beautiful effects of light in nature.

Erin Cridlebaugh, of Squirrel Hill Design and Craft, layers delicate laser-cut wood to create decorative topographic maps of our favorite places in the Finger Lakes.  Her degree in fine woodworking is complemented by her husband’s professional picture framing.

Folk artist Martha Gibbs grew up on a dairy farm in Penn Yan, NY, where her upbringing influences her art in its many mediums. She is a keen observer of nature with an attentive eye for detail.  Those qualities and her artistic talent extend to painting, felting, and paper crafts.   Her whimsical Advent calendars have appeal for all generations. Every calendar tells a story; each window has a playful surprise. The calendars may be framed for continued years of enjoyment.

Leah Hawley’s art pieces are created with recycled postage stamps from around the world. Once soaked free from envelopes, canceled stamps are trimmed-out using small-blade scissors. The variety of colors, shapes, and lines are skillfully worked into beautiful “paintings”.  Stamp pieces are worked together, stamp to stamp, mosaic style. Shading, depth, feathers, fur – all can be a bit tricky utilizing only stamp bits – but the real challenge comes in the efficient prep/storage/management of all these loose stamps!

Susan Troup, the “Artsy Lake Girl” from Rochester, NY, for several months each year draws creative inspiration from the crystal clear shores of Skaneateles Lake.  She paints furniture and smaller home décor items utilizing bright colors and simple designs that invoke a sense of happiness and energy.

Husband and wife team Bobbi and Keith Kappel create hand-painted pieces ranging from tree ornaments to tea trays to furniture and everything in-between.  Woodworker Keith creates the pieces, which are then lovingly painted by Bobbi.  The Kappel’s work is always popular.

Visitors to the Arts Center’s Sunny Point pottery studio are familiar with studio intern Alex Hileman’s love of all things clay.  Always alert to new ideas for things that can be made from clay, Alex has been busily creating pottery coasters, bowls, mugs, platters and more—perfect gifts and stocking stuffers.

Brandi Arno is known in the Rochester area and among plein air painters for her landscapes and still lifes.  For the holidays she is bringing us sweet little animal portraits.

Glenn and Naomi Lapp run Dundee’s Quilt Room.  Glenn’s whimsical wooden folk art - snowmen, small light-up houses and crèches are popular winter and holiday décor, as are the quilted placemats and table runners Naomi creates.

Also new to the Arts Center – the whimsical “Socket” sock puppets created by Tigercandy Arts.  Designed by two artists who have recently relocated to Yates County, the whimsical, hand-sewn puppets and puppet kits are sure to charm the young and the young-at-heart.
